The Syriac Orthodox Church is one of the most ancient Christian communities in the world, tracing its roots back to the apostolic era. It preserves the liturgy of St. James, the brother of our Lord, which is among the earliest and most venerated forms of Christian worship. This sacred liturgy, celebrated in the Syriac language—the Aramaic dialect spoken by Jesus Christ—connects us to the life and teachings of the apostles.
Today, the church is led by His Holiness Moran Mor Ignatius Aphrem II, Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, the 122nd successor to St. Peter. Residing in Damascus, Syria, His Holiness serves as the spiritual father to Syriac Orthodox Christians worldwide, uniting them in faith and tradition.
In North America, the Malankara Archdiocese of the Syriac Orthodox Church provides spiritual leadership to its congregations, including those in Canada. His Eminence Mor Titus Eldho, Archbishop of the Malankara Archdiocese, is a tireless shepherd guiding parishes across the continent. Under his care, the Syriac Orthodox churches in Canada, including St. Paul’s Syriac Orthodox Church in Barrie, thrive as centers of worship, culture, and community
Our congregation is primarily composed of immigrants from Kerala, India, known as Malankara in the Syriac Orthodox tradition. Christianity in Kerala has deep apostolic roots, as it was St. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, who brought the Gospel to the Malabar Coast. This heritage has shaped the spiritual and cultural identity of our members, who continue to uphold the faith and traditions of their forefathers.
St. Paul’s Syriac Orthodox Church began as a humble prayer group in March 2017, uniting believers who shared a common faith and desire to worship in the Syriac Orthodox tradition. With the leadership of Rev. Fr. V. V. Paulose and the dedication of its members, the group grew steadily, celebrating the Holy Qurbana monthly. In December 2019, the church was officially inaugurated by His Eminence Mor Titus Eldho and named in honor of St. Paul, the great missionary apostle.
Situated in Barrie, Ontario, our parish serves as a spiritual home for many immigrants, students, and families adjusting to life in Canada. Here, we find strength in our shared faith, preserve our cultural heritage, and support one another in navigating the challenges of a new environment.
At St. Paul’s Syriac Orthodox Church, we are a community united by faith, culture, and the mission to share Christ’s love through worship, fellowship, and service.
